Are you interested in pursuing a career in cybersecurity? Now is the best time to hone your ethical hacking skills – cybersecurity only continues to gain popularity as a profitable career option for people in the IT industry. In this blog, we’ll discuss cybersecurity and how an exciting platform such as Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions can help you develop your skills and gain real-world industry experience at the same time.

What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity refers to the practice of safeguarding computer systems, networks, and digital information from unwanted access and malicious attacks.

Is cybersecurity a good career path?

Cybersecurity continues to be one of the most in-demand fields in tech as businesses and organizations become ever more integrated into the digital landscape, increasing the need for computer security. It’s important to always stay up-to-date and ahead of the curve with the constantly evolving skills and competencies necessary in this fast-paced industry; that’s where CTF comes in.

What is a Capture the Flag competition in cybersecurity?

Innovative activities and platforms are being developed to help cybersecurity practitioners sharpen their skills and, at the same time, explore new scopes and trends that can help them broaden their knowledge in this field. One of the popular events that is gaining popularity is the Capture the Flag competition, where participants are tasked with identifying and exploiting system vulnerabilities using their ethical hacking skills in order to obtain a specific piece of information referred to as a “flag.”

CTF events are gaining worldwide significance across cybersecurity and the entire IT industry, as they provide diverse opportunities for students and professionals alike in terms of real-world cybersecurity experience, networking, career development, and more.

How to play Capture the Flag varies depending on the type of competition you’re participating in. There are two main categories of CTF competitions: jeopardy and attack-defense.

Jeopardy CTF

This type of CTF involves a series of questions that provide competitors with clues to solve complex tasks in a particular order. These clues guide them towards the techniques and methodologies that they will need going forward. Points are awarded to teams for each task they successfully solve. You can gain more points for successfully completing a task that is more challenging. These challenges often cover different topics, including digital forensics, reverse engineering, steganography, and the like.

Attack-Defense

In this CTF style, a team must defend a host PC while attacking the other target PCs. Each team is given a designated time to patch and secure their PCs, aiming to identify as many vulnerabilities as possible before the opposing teams can initiate their attacks. Points are awarded to teams for defending against attacks from opposing teams and for successfully infiltrating others. The team that accumulates the highest number of points is declared the winner.

What is a hackathon, and how is it different from CTF?

While often correlated with CTF, a hackathon is different from a CTF competition, as the former tends to focus more on creating innovative solutions or developing software or hardware projects in a collaborative environment. In the larger areas of cybersecurity and technology, both offer special opportunities for people to show off their skills and creativity.

How can CTF events help shape the future of cybersecurity students?

As the digital world continues to evolve rapidly, with more and more complex security threats on the rise, CTF events play an important role not only for cybersecurity professionals but also in students’ continuous learning. They provide opportunities to harness analytical thinking and problem-solving skills in a hands-on environment.

CTF events are also the perfect platform for keeping participants informed about current trends and technologies in the field of cybersecurity. The challenges presented in these competitions help keep participants up-to-date on the newest tools and strategies used by hackers.

These events also open networking and career opportunities to all participants, as they can connect with peers and industry leaders, and employers oftentimes take notice of CTF competitions to be on the lookout for new talent.

At TSOM, our Diploma in Cybersecurity Specialist Co-op program provides students with up-to-date, industry-standard curricula as well as academic and career-relevant opportunities to enhance their learning. These activities include taking part in CTF competitions, where we partner with different companies as well as other institutes and organizations for a showdown of the best cybersecurity teams in Toronto. Notable competitions include online CTFs with the EC-Council and main CTF events, such as the one happening at the CISO Forum on February 12th, 2024.
