Capstone Project
The Business Essentials (Accelerated) program culminates with a capstone project that you will complete in 12 weeks. This project allows you to apply the concepts you learned in class and dive deeply into a topic of interest, showcasing your analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills in a specific scenario and solve industry-relevant challenges.

Approval and Mentorship
To get started on a capstone project, you must first receive approval from the Career Services department and be appointed a project mentor.
Timeline
The project spans 12 weeks, with 6 structured phases:
- Week 1: setting goals, creating a roadmap, establishing a mentorship schedule.
- Weeks 2-5: conducting research and analysis.
- Week 6: mid-point evaluation with mentor.
- Weeks 7-10: completing project work and finalizing strategies and analyses.
- Week 11: writing the report and preparing your presentation
- Week 12: submitting the completed report and presenting your project
Project Deliverables
- Project plan and schedule (approved by project mentor)
- Final project report
- Presentation of the project
Project Topic
You may have a great idea you would like to investigate. The capstone project offers the freedom to explore your interests that integrate with the program’s learning outcomes. Your project mentor is also there for support if you need guidance in selecting a topic.
The capstone provides a unique opportunity to address real-world business challenges by applying innovative strategies and strategic thinking. It equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a dynamic industry.
The program is comprised of 240 hours of classroom learning and another 240 hours toward the completion of a final capstone project. Graduates of the program will successfully complete the following modules:
The modules include:
1. Fundamentals of Business Communications
This module will help you develop and enhance your written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills, time management skills, and presentation techniques to ensure success in any business environment. You will also learn to use Microsoft Office to help you operate more efficiently and be more productive.
2. Managing Financial Resources
This module aims to give you an understanding of where and how to access financial resources, such as loans or grants, and the skills to analyze and interpret financial data for strategic decision-making.
3. Organizations and Behavior
This module will give you an understanding of individual and group behavior in organizations and the ability to examine current theories and their application in managing workplace behavior.
4. Marketing Principles
This module equips you with a solid understanding of the core concepts and principles of marketing.
5. Capstone Project
The capstone module is the culmination of the Certificate in Business Essentials (Accelerated) program, where you will tackle a real-world business challenge over 12 weeks. Guided by a mentor, you will apply your knowledge and research skills to an area of business development and present your findings. This experience equips you with the skills and confidence to excel in results-driven business environments.
- Have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or be at least 18 years of age and pass the Wonderlic test.
For non-native English speakers:
- Successful completion of TSOM EAP Level 2 or
- Have the required IELTS 4.5 score or equivalent or
- Pass the TSOM English Assessment
Computer Use Expectation
In order to successfully progress through your studies at Toronto School of Management (TSOM), it is recommended that you have access to a personal computer or laptop. TSOM offers access to computer labs on campus, but availability cannot be guaranteed and some program software may not be available on all open access computers.
The assessment of each module consists of:
- 2 individual assignments or class tests: 25% each
- final exam: 40%
- contribution mark: 10%
If you do not pass the module, you can re-take the module when it is offered next and by paying a retake fee.
