Inside Luxury Hospitality: TSOM Students Visit Shangri-La Hotel Toronto

On March 31, 2025, students from Toronto School of Management’s (TSOM) Hospitality and Tourism program visited the iconic Shangri-La Hotel Toronto, in the heart of the city’s business and entertainment districts. The immersive site visit offered students an in-depth look at the hotel’s luxury operations, Asian-inspired design, and signature guest experience.

The group was welcomed by the Shangri-La’s Human Resources Manager Sureshi Chandrasena, Director of Guest Rooms, Adam El Alfy, and Assistant Banquet Manager David Welch. Students toured the hotel’s executive suites, guest rooms, banquet halls, and rooftop beehives, where the hotel produces its own honey.

Throughout the tour, students were introduced to the hotel’s blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics, from art and antiques to smart technology integration and sustainable practices. They engaged with the Shangri-La’s leadership team to learn about strategic marketing, customer service, staff development, and the hotel’s unique “home-away-from-home” philosophy.

The visit concluded with a networking opportunity and refreshments, giving students the chance to connect with hotel staff and ask further questions about industry careers and hotel operations.

TSOM extends a special thank you to the Shangri-La Toronto team for their warm hospitality and invaluable insights, as well as to Dr. Rasmi Kokash for organizing this enriching visit.
