Toronto School of Management hosted its second annual 2024 Cybersecurity Capture the Flag (CTF) Competition at the SiberX CISO Forum Canada in Toronto, which saw the TSOM Eagles taking first prize!
The competition, held on February 12, welcomed teams from colleges and institutions such as Niagara College – Toronto, Trebas Institute Ontario, Computek College, Skills for Change, and YES Employment Services. Representing TSOM were two teams of talented students from our Diploma in Cybersecurity Specialist Co-op program.
Racing against the clock, teams used their cybersecurity skills to find and fix vulnerabilities in a simulated real-world system. After a fierce battle and impressive showcase of hacking talent, the TSOM Eagles (Camila Ramirez, Gabriel Manfre Ribeiro Garcia, Ruben Comla and Vinicius Lima) emerged victorious. Th0se IT Guy$, representing Skills for Change, took home second place, with 404NotFounders, who represented Youth Employment Services, placing third.
TSOM’s Shields team (Antonio Revuelta, Hugo Dardon, Runkai Bai, and Wang Pan) placed an impressive fourth out of the twelve competing teams.
Special guest, Chris Roberts, presented the awards to the top three teams at the forum’s award ceremony. Mr. Roberts is one of the world’s foremost experts on counter threat intelligence and vulnerability research within the Information Security industry. He is routinely invited to speak at industry conferences and has been featured on CNN, The Washington Post, WIRED, Business Insider, USA Today, Forbes, Newsweek, BBC News, Wall Street Journal, and numerous other media outlets. Students were honoured that Mr. Roberts took the time to speak with the winning teams, offering invaluable guidance and coaching. In addition, winners were able to network with esteemed company directors and executives in attendance.
“We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to offer something truly unique this year by hosting our 2024 CTF Competition at the SiberX CISO Forum Canada. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, extending beyond traditional classrooms and structured co-op experiences. We are thrilled to provide this valuable opportunity not only to our Cybersecurity students but also to other teams and institutions in our community,” said Gabriel Quiroz, Academic Director, Technology (Colleges) at the Toronto School of Management.
CTF competitions play an important role in the showcase and development of cybersecurity student talent and TSOM is proud to be at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field. TSOM would like to thank our premium sponsor, BlokSec for supporting these initiatives and future Cybersecurity professionals. We also thank our many supporters and additional sponsors: CompTIA, ConnexLearn, CyberBPO, CyberGamified, EC-Council, IPSEITY Security, NetMechanics and of course, SiberX, for involving us in their forum.
The 2024 CTF competition was a resounding success, and we can’t wait to see everyone back for more cyber hacking action next year. Congratulations again to all the winners!
